The tasks a Filter Pressman is expected to perform include:
Operating filter press to filter mud and other sediments from sugarcane juice
Covering filter plates with cloth or canvas
Tightening hand screw to close press
Drying filter cloth, if necessary, by operating valve and passing steam into press
Opening and regulating valve until specified pressure is indicated on gauge fitted to the pump
Directing juice to another press, when flow of filtered juice gets clogged
Washing mud on filter cloth by opening hot water valve
Opening steam valve to pass steam into filter cloth for drying mud cake
Filtering plates for next filtration
Operating power driven rotary filter
Rotating drum through which juice is sucked while mud sticks to the drum
Knowledge of safety and hygiene regulations
Knowledge of handling and managing valves and gauges of different machines
Skilled in using relevant tools and equipment in filtration process
Knowledge of production processes and quality control
Skilled in filtering techniques used in the process
Skilled in operating filtering machine
Proficient in extraction of sugar and its by-products

Food Industry in India
According to Indian Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution in world food trade every year. In India, the food sector has emerged as a high-profit sector. The role of the Indian government has been instrumental in the growth and development of the industry. The Indian food and grocery market is the world?s sixth largest, with retail contributing 70 per cent of the sales. It is projected to grow at the rate of 104 per cent, touching US$ 482 billion by 2020.
India has become the largest producer of sugar cane/sugar producing. Government has been encouraging setting up of new sugar mills as well as expansions up to 5000 TCD allowing up to 100% of sugar for new mills and 80% for expanded units. Today there are 448 mills with average size of 2150 TPD with some units of 10000 TCD and few of 5000 TCD. This shows that in coming decades a boom can be expected in the sector with immense demand of trained professionals. Therefore, the career as a Fitter Pressman has a bright future and opportunities are only going to rise in coming time.
