Minimum B.Sc. in Tea Husbandry and Technology

Minimum 10 yearsexperience required

The tasks a Tea Maker is expected to perform include:

Controlling the various processes in the tea factory to treat and prepare green tea leaves fit for brewing and the final preparation of green or black tea

Checking that the green tea leaves are withered in lofts by the Withering Loft Attendant and have proper moisture content before rolling

Ensuring that the withered leaves are properly rolled by the Roller Attendant

Arranging for the fermenting of rolled leaves and examining them by touch, sight and smell for proper fermentation before firing or drying

Checking that the fermented leaves are dried at the required temperature by the Firing Machine Attendant and the processed tea leaves are properly sorted and graded by the Tea Factory Operatives

Examining a sample infusion of the different grades of tea and tastes to decide if the colour, flavour and aroma are according to the desired standards

Skilled in assessing the right leaves for brewing and final preparation of tea

Ability to detect the adequate amount of moisture in the tea leaves before sending them for brewing

Skilled in the fermentation of leaves

Ability to handle a big staff

Ability to examine tea leaves by touch, taste or smell

Knowledge of the temperature required during fermentation

Knowledge of the different varieties of teas and their individual processing methods

Ability to keep abreast with the latest processing methods and equipment in tea manufacturing

In India, the tea industry is one of the oldest agro-based well organized industries. More than a million workers get direct employment from this industry. This shows that in coming decades a boom can be expected in the sector with immense demand for trained professionals which makes the Tea Maker job a bright future prospect.
