Shredding Machine Operator, Tobacco

The tasks a Cutting Machine Operator, Tobacco is expected to perform include:

Tending the machine that cuts tobacco into shreds for use in making cigarettes

Setting the cutting knife and adjusting the machine

Filling the hopper of cutting machine with leaves

Starting the machine, causing feed rolls to revolve and knife to reciprocate

Watching the cutting process to ensure that machine is shredding tobacco correctly

Making minor adjustments to the machine

Knowledge of checking cut tobacco by feeling it with fingers to ensure moisture content

Well-versed in drawing cut tobacco from knife by hand to platform

Adept with removing/ rejecting such as stems, uncut leaves and other foreign matter and pushing rest of cut tobacco to conveyor

Ability to make minor adjustments to the machine such as tightening bolts that hold knives in place and adjusting rollers

Knowledge of replacing the dull knives with sharpened ones when necessary

Knowledge of cleaning and oiling the machine

Good hand eye co-ordination

Diligent and hard working

Motor skills

Good observation skills

Attention to detail

Physically fit

It needs one to be on their toes

Need not handle a team

Local travelling maybe a part of this job

Part-time work and contractual jobs maybe available in some cities

Working hours
Tobacco factories usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours every day. This may vary from one factory to factory

Health risk includes extreme heat, inadequate illumination, vibration, exposure to dust and chemicals, etc.

For freshers - INR 5,000 to INR 6,000 per month

For candidates with 2-4 years of experience or more - INR 7,000 to INR 8,000 per month

Growth Estimates and Latest Trends of Tobacco Industry in India

Exports of Indian tobacco and tobacco products have witnessed a rising trend and growth in the past few years. As of December 2014, the exports showed that India has so far exported 18,003 tonnes of tobacco in the period of 2014-15.

Currently, India is the second-largest exporter of FCV tobacco in the world and Indian tobacco is exported to around 100 countries. India exports unmanufactured tobacco primarily to Western Europe, South & South-east Asia, East Europe and Africa. All these factors put together is only going to increase the job opportunities in the Tobacco Industry across towns and cities in India.
