The tasks a Supervisor and Foreman, Musical Instrument Making is expected to perform include:

Supervising the production of string, wind or percussion musical instruments and ensuring their correct tuning

Studying the specifications of an individual musical instrument or a batch of musical instruments to be made and distributing work according to the type of instrument amongst specialized workers

Arranging for various parts and accessories such as reeds, cabinets, shells, metal strings, leather etc., as required and maintaining the necessary stock to distribute amongst workers as needed

Supervising the tooling, assembling and production processes, getting defects removed as noticed and guiding workers to ensure correct working

Checking tuning, fittings, finishings and other details with a standard sample and prescribed specifications and ensuring correct production

Knowledge of electronics if working on modern instruments like keyboards

Ability to work with a variety of materials including wood, metal, plastic and fibreglass, depending on the instrument

Well-versed in using traditional hand tools for working with wood or metal

Competent in tuning instruments to make sure they produce high-quality sound

Proficiency in maintaining prescribed records and registers and conducting repairs of defective instruments

Good hand-eye co-ordination

Dexterity of hands

Ability to train new workers

Knowledge of one or more musical instruments

Working hours

Musical instrument crafters usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit

Occupational hazards may include musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory disorders, cuts, skin allergies and irritation, etc.

Health risks include exposure to hazardous preservatives or pesticides on wood used for instrument making, inhalation of wood or metal dust, sharp cutting tools like chisels, rasps, files, hand saws, sandpaper or electric saws, sanders, drills, lathes and other instrument making machines, lifting, pushing, pulling, repetitive tasks, confined spaces, etc.

For candidates with 2-4 years of experience - INR 18,000 to INR 20,000 per month

For candidates with 5 years of experience or more - INR 30,000 to INR 50,000 per month
