The tasks a Supervisor and Foreman, Carpentry, Cabinet Making and Wood Working Processes is expected to perform include:

Supervising and guiding carpenters and related workers engaged in making furniture, coaches, vehicle bodies, carts, etc. according to sample or prescribed specifications

Studying drawings or sample, selecting right type of lumber or machined pieces

Explaining sizes, joints and article to be made to carpenters supervised

Proficient in checking work from time to time

Proficient in ensuring making of correct joints, fittings and working and guiding workers as necessary

Well-versed with examining assembled articles for shape, size, rigidity, finish, etc. and getting defects removed where noticed

Knowledge of maintaining necessary records and registers

Proficient in serving as liaison between workers and management

Knowledge of undertaking repairing work or evolving new designs

Team worker

Working hours are 10/12 hours everyday for 5/6 days a week. This may vary from factory to factory

For freshers - INR 25,000 to INR 30,000 per month

For candidates with 3-7 years of experience or more - INR 35,000 to INR 40,000 per month

Overview of Wood and Carpentry Sector in India

India is a land of wonderful and marvellous artistic work of wood which is being appreciated worldwide. The rich Indian handicraft and beautiful traditional attributes of art and design have established a reputation of Indian Furniture Industry in the nation and worldwide.

Indian furniture market is estimated to be worth US$ 7,922 million. Of this, wooden furniture accounts for US$ 1,358 million. The major part of this industry, approximately 85 per cent is in the unorganised sector. Wood accounts for nearly 65 per cent of all furniture made in India. This includes several types of indigenous wood, as well as imported wood.

Furniture produced in India falls into two broad categories, depending on the end user; domestic furniture meant for home use and commercial furniture meant for the office and hospitality sectors. Domestic furniture represents almost two-thirds of the total output. Manufacturers in the domestic sector typically try to differentiate on the basis of design variety and price, while in the commercial space, having a strong and reliable brand is important.

Home furniture is the largest segment in the Indian furniture market, accounting for about 65 per cent of furniture sales. This is followed by, the office furniture segment with a 20 per cent share and the contract segment, accounting for the remaining 15 per cent.

With the steady growth in the Indian economy and the consequent rise in living standards, the demand for furniture is expected to increase in India. The three key drivers that will have a significant impact on the sector are: Changing consumer demographics, Real estate/housing boom and Tourism and hospitality industry growth. The Indian wooden furniture industry is expected to grow by 20 per cent in coming times.

The furniture industry in India currently employs a total of around 300,000 workers and with the growing furniture demand there will be huge employment opportunity in Indian wood and carpentry segment.
