The tasks a Supervisor and Foreman, Shoemaking is expected to perform include:
Supervising and guiding workers engaged in manufacture of footwear and their components
Studying designs and sketches of shoes or other types of footwear to be made
Selecting right type of leather, canvass and other raw materials,
Setting machines and assembly line, distributing work according to system of manufacture and conducting operations to ensure correct use of men and materials
Checking components at various stages of production
Arranging regular flow of materials for line assembly work and getting snags removed as noticed
Ensuring correct production and getting batches checked by Examiner
Maintaining production log, material and other accounts and serving as a liaison between the workers and management
Proficient in identifying the finished leather, its thickness
Knowledge of all the machineries and its functions
Knowledge of machinery used for production
Proficient in handling machinery and materials
Well versed in handling equipment and its operating procedures
Proficientinfollowingworkinstructions
Good mathematical skills
Skilled in design and pattern making
Knowledge of sequence of operation
Knowledge of cost reduction methods

The leather industry in India produces approx.?1055 billion worth of leather in various forms. Out of this,?661 billion (62%) is consumed domestically and the remaining is exported (37%). This share of consumption and export is estimated to change and in 2020 India will account for?1.4 trillion (59.1%) worth of domestic consumption and earn?673 billion (40.9%) worth from exports.

Demand growth for leather goods is expected from footwear, bags, purses, furniture etc. all driven by the Indian consumption boom. Penetration of export markets is expected to rise in the wake of increased sourcing by global retail majors and luxury brands. India is the second largest global maker of footwear after China, accounting for 13% of global footwear production of 16 billion pairs.
