The tasks a Gemstone Rough Cutter is expected to perform include:

Cutting the rough gemstone as per planning and marking in order to achieve maximum yield

Basic knowledge of gemmology and the properties of different types of stones

Different types of stones such as precious, semi-precious, synthetic

Understanding the market value of stones to understand the rationale for different acceptable levels of stone loss

Knowledge of the origin of the stone, i.e., which mine, particularly for precious stones to read the softness/hardness as developed from precedence of use

Knowledge of which stone can be cabochon and which can be faceted

Knowledge of the treatment of inclusions depending on the value of the stone

Knowledge of the different types of saws and their use for a specific stone
