Certified training for Commercial Vehicle Driver Level 3 (programme aligned to ASC/Q9702 released by Automotive Skills Development Council)

Experience of 1-2 years if ASDC Driving Assistant certificate holder and minimum 6 months experience in driving a Light Motor Vehicle (LMV)

The tasks a Commercial Vehicle Driver Level 3 is expected to perform include: Driving a commercial vehicle including LCV, pick-up trucks, bus, maxi cab, school van, heavy commercial vehicles, etc.Driving safely on the assigned route with or without the company of a senior driver

Operating within city limits and outside it as and when required

Ensuring safety of passengers or goods as well as public on the road

Achieving key performance parameters like fuel efficiency, on time delivery, etc.

Skilled in co-ordinating with the depot or the branch office

Familiar with assessing the road worthiness of the vehicle in hand

Proficiency in maintaining safety on the assigned route within limited geography

Ability to practice HSE and security-related guidelines

Knowledge of basic technical check before the trip

Efficiency in conforming to traffic rules and regulations

Basic arithmetic skills

Ability to stay abreast with the latest technological advancements

Manual dexterity

ASDC Commercial Vehicle Driving Assistant and/or ASDC Auto Service Technician Level 2 certificate holder

Training in road safety, familiarity with features & basic repairs for vehicles under control Knowledge of GPS or navigation system Some training in stress management like yoga is recommended Basic auto servicing and minor repairs

Demand for Public Transport Affecting All

Rapid economic development exerts pressure on all infrastructure services vital for economic efficiency and social sustainability, particularly transport infrastructure. In India, sustaining this increase in economic productivity is contingent on meeting the mobility demand that such economic growth creates, and hence on optimally utilizing existing infrastructure (Justus (1998); Gowda (1999)). In addition, transport accounts for a substantial and growing proportion of air pollution in Indian cities, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, and is a major consumer of energy (Ramanathan and Parikh (1999)). Transport is also the largest contributor to noise pollution, and has substantial safety and waste management concerns (Singh (2000)). Finally, access to transport services is considered critical for addressing equity concerns by facilitating access to primary education and employment generation facilities. Transport infrastructure is also important for integrating rural communities in the socioeconomic structure of the nation.

This calls for a greater share of public transport in meeting mobility needs. Not only is an efficient public bus system important for meeting the mobility needs in this rapidly growing economy, but a higher share of bus transport would also reduce pollution, both local and global, and energy demand. Hence, it is incumbent on governments in developing countries to institute appropriate policy initiatives to increase the share of public transport.

Such interventions must be informed by research that identifies factors influencing the demand for public transport. The most common method for characterizing the influence of such variables is by estimating the elasticity of demand with respect to each of these variables.This means there will be an increase in job opportunities for Commercial Vehicle Drivers Level 3.
