The tasks an Electrician, General is expected to perform include:

Installing, maintaining and repairing electrical machinery equipment and fittings

Studying drawings and other specifications to determine electrical circuit, installation details, etc.

Positioning and installing electrical motors, transformers, etc.

Making connections and soldering terminals

Testing electrical installations and equipment and locating faults

Repairing or replacing defective wiring, burnt out fuses and defective parts

Keeping fittings and fixtures in working order

Operating, attending and maintaining electrical motors, pumps, etc.

Knowledge of installing, maintaining and repairing electrical machinery equipment and fittings

Ability to study drawings and specifications to determine electrical circuit, installation details, etc.Ability to make connections and soldering terminals

Proficient in testing electrical installations and equipment and locating faults

Overview of Electrician in India

After agriculture, construction sector is the 2nd largest employer in the country. This sector creates millions of jobs each year. Construction sectors growth is expected to reach 7.5 percent by 2016-17 from current growth rates of 5.6 percent. The estimated requirement for skills like Electrical plumbing and other construction installation activities is expected to increase from 0.29 million for period 2013-2017 to 0.37 for the period 2013-2022.

Today an unskilled electrician with basic schooling earns around 10,000 per month. With experience electrician's salary rises about 18,000 to . 20,000 in five years, and around 25,000 to . 30,000 in eight years or so. So in about eight to ten years, the electrician would get a respectable salary of 25,000 per month.

According to industry people, there is a huge shortage of electricians. For every 10 electricians required in the industry, only 2 are available. With the countrys infrastructure sector on the verge of a potential boom, the demand for Electricians, Plumbers, Fitters and Welders has grown exponentially. Companies like Godrej and Tata Steel are in need of large numbers of skilled Electricians, Welders, Fitters and the like.

Private sector companies are collaborating with NGOs to training institutes across the country to help train and enhance the skills of people in various trades. Some provide vocational and entrepreneurship training for youths.
