Pressman

The tasks a Pressman is expected to perform include:

Setting and operating Flat-bed letter press (printing machine in which separate sheets of paper are pressed by means of cylinder or plate (platen) on inked rollers and oiling machine

Filling ink fountain and regulating flow of ink on inking rollers

Locking type in position on bed of press by means of wedges

Placing wooden block over type and tapping it with mallet to level printing surface

Packing surface of cylinder, or platening with tissue paper

Starting press and pulling proof sheets

Examining proof sheets to ensure legibility and uniformity of printing

Adjusting press controls, inking fountains and automatic feeders

Repacking cylinder or plate with overlay to equalize off-level areas as required

Pulling out several proof sheets and making necessary adjustments until evenly printed proof is obtained

Setting and adjusting paper guides and feeding mechanism

Starting press and ensuring that printing proceeds correctly

Stopping press when printing is completed

Knowledge of printing

Knowledge of operating flatbed letter press

Proficient in filling inking fountains

Well-versed in printing tools like cylinder, inking fountains, etc.

Knowledge of mixing inks to match colours, feeding paper sheets into machine by hand or directing helpers to do so, making up pages of type

Knowledge of doing minor repairs

Diligent and hardworking

Result-oriented

Ability to follow instructions

Good hand eye co-ordination

Accuracy in work

It needs one to be on their toes

The Indian Printing Industry, growing at a rate of 12% per annum, comprises more than 250,000 big, small and medium printers. The current annual turnover of the industry is more than 50,000 crores (USD 11 Billion).
