On-the-job training desirable for ASDC Automotive Body Technician Level 4 certificate holders or ITI diploma holders
The tasks an Auto Body Repair Technician/Denter Level 4 is expected to perform include:
Carrying out repair work on the body/frame of the vehicle
Removing major/minor dents on the body
Repairing and replacing the vehicle body and chassis component
Carrying out repairs for metal corrosion on the structural panel
Knowledge of how to assess the overall damage to the vehicle and chassis component
Knowledge of different tools like wrenches, welding equipment, hand tools, metal cutting guns, etc. and their usage
Knowledge of the various welding techniques like spot welding, tungsten arc welding, etc.
Knowledge of the various procedures for measurement of length, depth, angles, etc.
Familiarity with the procedure for the routine adjustment of measuring equipment
Knowledge of how to repair and fix the temporarily attached body parts like doors, bumper, etc.
Familiarity with the various cleaning agents/sprays like de-waxing, detergents, etc.
Knowledge of using tools like pneumatic hammer, power buffers, pullers, etc. for the repair process
Good interpersonal skills

The cumulative Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow into the Indian automobile industry during the period April 2000 ? August 2014 was recorded at US$ 10,119.68 million, as per data by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). This industry accounts for 22 per cent of the country's manufacturing Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Future Trends of Automotive Sector in India
The future of the auto industry depends on the positive sentiments and the demand for vehicles in the market. The Indian auto sector will see a rise in demand which is expected to bring in major growth. An auto dealer survey by the firm UBS suggested that the Indian auto industry, riding on trends like the upcoming festival season and the decline in fuel price, will observe a 12 per cent y-o-y growth in FY15. The Automobile Mission Plan for the period 2006?2016, designed by the government, is aimed at accelerating and sustaining growth in this sector.
Employment Scenario of Automotive Sector
With 6.7% contribution to India?s GDP, the automobile industry is one of the key manufacturing sectors in India. India is currently the sixth largest passenger car producer in the world with an annual turnover of around 55 billion USD in FY 2013 and employs around 18.5 million people (directly and indirectly). Direct employment includes personnel working with automobile OEMs and auto component manufacturers (about 30% to 40%). Indirect employment includes personnel working in enabling industries, such as vehicle finance and insurance, vehicle repair, vehicle service stations, vehicle maintenance, vehicle and component dealers, drivers, cleaners, etc. (about 60 to 70%). This means there will be an increase in job opportunities for Auto Body Repair Technicians/ Denter Level 4.
