The tasks a Forester and Related Worker, Other is expected to perform include:Supervising duties of forest guards and forest fire watchers Assisting forest ranger in development of forest and exploitation of its produce

Raising nurseries of various plants required for afforestation

Arranging for weeding in the nurseries Marking and cutting the trees within his block

Issuing transit and other passes

Protecting forest produce from theft and poaching

Supervising fire-fighting operations

Maintaining records of timber felled for sale

Enquiring and reporting occurrence of theft, fire, illegal cultivation, etc. to higher authorities

Supervising work of labourers engaged in forest work, maintaining their attendance and arranging payment of their wages

Collecting, preparing and storing seeds from plants and trees

Raising seedlings and transplanting them in the afforestation area

Protecting trees from insects, diseases and animals

Equipped in firefighting operations Knowledge of afforestation methods and techniques Skilled in integrated insect, pest and disease management Skilled in forestry management Proficient in preparing beds and pots for plantation

Familiar with nutrient management of the soil

Equipped in cutting trees for timber Skilled in basic nursery management Skilled in survival training Knowledge of operating fire arms Maintain a valid driving license Knowledge of operating equipment like chain saws

Indian forestry revolves around social and environmental elements of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM). The demand for wood and wood products will continue to increase in the future. The present need is met mainly from the agroforestry sector and balance demand through imports. The forests of the country are catering to 16% of human and 18% of cattle population needs. India is also maintaining around 20% of the forest area under a protected area network for providing ecological security.

The forestry sector is impacted by other sectors such as energy, agriculture, education, water resources, industry, infrastructure development, biofuels, change in demographic structure and high economic growth. All the policies of the Government of India have to move around the prime objective of the National Forest Policy and mandate of achieving 33% forest and tree cover in the country.
