Overview of Sugarcane Industry in India

Sugarcane supports one of the largest agro-processing industries of India and more than 6 million farmers are engaged in its cultivation. Besides, about half a million skilled and semi-skilled workers, mostly from rural areas are also engaged in the sugar industry. By 2030, India will require nearly 33 million tonnes of white sugar for domestic consumption alone. Production of alcohol for partial replacement of fossil fuel and use of bagasse in cogeneration of electricity has great potential in future and thus requirement of cane will increase further. With an average sugar recovery of 10.75 per cent, about 520 million tonnes of sugarcane will have to be produced to meet the requirements.

The job of Cane Cutters is seasonal in nature. Whenever the harvesting period of sugarcane arrives, the cutter migrates to that area in search of jobs. With the increasing demand of sugar, the cultivated area of sugar is increasing which will increase the demand for Cane Cutters.
