Overview of Beauty & Wellness Sector in India

India is currently the 10th fastest growing market globally in Beauty & Wellness sector. In the Beauty and Wellness industry, only 20% to 30% of the total market share is controlled by the organized players. The rest of the market is unorganized and fragmented with the presence of small and regional players. As per the report by Global Hospitality Consultant HVS, India was listed as one of the top 20 spa countries worldwide. Moreover, Ayurveda, MedSpa, Natural and Resort based Spa rejuvenation centres are estimated to contribute over 30% of the total income in the tourism industry.

Skill Gap of Beauty & Wellness Sector

According to National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) studies, India is likely to face a combined incremental manpower shortage of 347 million by 2022 in 20 identified high growth sectors, the informal segment and the infrastructure arena. In case of the wellness sector, the skill gap study also suggests a likely shortage of 545,000 beauticians alone by 2022.

Given the stupendous growth of the Indian wellness sector in the past three years, it is believed that the actual shortage of skilled manpower is going to be far more than the ICRA projection unless current measures are speeded up. In 2011, a PwC study had projected that the wellness services sector would face a shortage of 600,000 skilled personnel by 2016. It had also said the number of people employed in the sector could treble from the current one million by 2015.

Future Trends of Beauty & Wellness Sector in India

The wellness industry is expected to cross 1 trillion by 2015, marking a significant milestone for this sector in India. The industry is also expected to grow at CAGR of 15-17%. This means that in the future, there is going to be a continuous and increasing demand for this job role. All these factors put together is only going to increase the job opportunities for a Pedicurist and Manicurist across towns and cities in India.
