Minimum 0-2 years of work experience/internship in application maintenance

The tasks an Application Maintenance Engineer is expected to perform include:

Ensuring the availability of an application or product for end users

Interacting with senior client personnel to understand the application issues

Providing technical support and resolving issues for current business applications

Monitoring system security and system event log files

Monitoring and evaluating system metrics to identify vulnerabilities/problem trends

Monitoring systems to identify issue alerts and customer change requests

Analysing alerts, to accurately identify issues

Recording, issues and change requests, using relevant tools and procedures

Accessing the organisation?s knowledge base to identify any immediate solutions/workarounds

Evaluating new design solutions where immediate solutions are not available

Making agreed changes to address issues, wherever applicable

Performing testing on the changes

Preparing documents, deployment scripts and release notes using standard templates and tools

Updating the organisation?s knowledge base with the changes

Aware off relevant product reference guides or support materials Knowledge of methods and techniques used to identify/evaluate workarounds or new solutions Familiar with developing documentation, deployment scripts and release notes

Skilled in configuration management and version control techniques for software maintenance/changes Knowledge of procedures, practices and tools for developing, testing and applying changes to software Knowledge of SDLC and other processes used in software development/maintenance

Courses/certifications/technical trainings on specific software applications and their maintenance requirements

Prospects in IT Sector in India

According to the ?Human Resource and Skill Requirements in the IT and ITES Industry Sector (2022)report, software products form the fastest growing segment of the global IT industry, with the software spends forecast to grow from USD 294 billion in FY 2008 to USD 537 billion in 2015. Over the same period, the addressable market for Indian software product businesses is estimated to reach USD 290 to 315 billion. The Indian IT and ITES industry currently employs about 2.2 million persons in comparison to 0.8 million in 2004. Based on the trends witnessed in productivity and the likely growth potential of the IT and ITES industry, it is expected that the industry would employ about 7.5 million persons directly by 2022.

In the IT Exports segment, a large portion (over 80%) of the workforce is currently engineers and MCAs. The proportion of graduates in science and other streams engaged in software development is expected to show significant increase from about 5% to 10% currently to about 15% to 20%. This shows the trend is moving towards more cost cutting and providing in-house training wherever possible.

The growth in software industry will lead to more requirements of Application Maintenance Engineers.
