The tasks a Product Conceptualization Engineer is expected to perform include:
Creating and developing ideas for a new product
Collecting data for performing sensitivity, trend, economic analysis
Collating information for conducting internal and external benchmarking
Assisting in the creation of SQFD (Simplified Quality Function Definition)
Understanding the regulatory environment
Supporting in the assimilation of cross-functional teams
Proficiency in collecting data and conducting basic level analysis of sensitivity, competitor etc. on the basis of technical parameters that are defined
Knowledge of the basic fundamentals of machines and mechanics
Familiar with the application of relevant principles of functionality, ergonomics, aesthetics etc.
Proficiency in considering relevant social, economic, environmental, sustainable, ethical and cultural issues that may impact design solutions
Proficiency in conducting SWOT (Strength Weakness Opportunity Threat), PESTLE (Political Economic Social Technological Legal Environmental) analysis
Familiar with the use of different data analytics tools
Knowledge of basic arithmetic and calculation methods for tolerance limits
Familiar with the metallurgical properties of metals used for different processes
Knowledge of methods of using instruments like Vernier callipers, micrometres, rulers and other inspection tools
Training in effective data collection for market, economic, trend analysis, economic, regulatory and environmental scenarios as applicable and problem solving
Proficiency in reading and interpreting sketches and engineering drawings
Knowledge of the latest technologies in the auto industry

Market Size of the Automotive Sector in India
The cumulative Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows into the Indian automobile industry during the period of April 2000?August 2014 was recorded at USD 10,119.68 million, as per data by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). This industry accounts for 22 per cent of the country's manufacturing Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Employment Trends
The Automotive Mission Plan for the period of 2006-2016 aims to make India emerge as a global automotive hub. The idea is to make India as the destination of choice for the design and manufacture of automobiles and auto components, with outputs soaring to reach USD 145 billion which basically accounts for more than 10% of the GDP. This would also provide further employment to over 25 million people by 2016 making the automobile the sunrise sector of the economy.
According to the Confederation of Indian Industry, the automobile sector currently employs over 80 lakh people. An extension in production in the automobile industry is forecasted, and it is likely to rise to Rs. 6,00,000 crore by 2016.
