The tasks a Process Design Engineer is expected to perform include:
Studying the drawing for the new product
Studying dimensional tolerances of the new product
Deciding process requirements of the new product
Analyzing and evaluating the existing manufacturing process in relation to the new product
Analyzing the drawing for any new tools and equipment requirements
Analyzing the equipment available and selecting the best alternative
Breaking down the total process into operations at each station
Conducting phase III of the process design with product design simultaneously
Conducting discussions in CFT and finalizing the PF, PFMEA, CP documentation, etc.
Skilled in reading product engineering drawings
Knowledge of dimensional tolerances
Familiar with CAD software and 3D modelling techniques
Knowledge of complete layout requirements for the process in consideration
Familiar with the material flow and information flow of the process
Basic knowledge of documents required for new process approvals
Knowledge of equipment available in the local and global market
Basic knowledge of technological upgrades introduced in the market
Basic knowledge of economic factors involved in the process
Knowledge of the control system and automation
Basic knowledge of 5S procedures
Training in the fundamentals of statistics
Independent worker Decision-making skills
Result-oriented Team player Good organizing skills
It is a desk job
May need to handle a team of Engineers
Local travelling is not a part of this job role

Trends in the Automotive Manufacturing Industry in India
The Automotive Mission Plan for the period of 2006-2016 aims to make India emerge as a global automotive hub. The idea is to make India as the destination choice for the design and manufacture of automobiles and auto components, with outputs soaring to reach USD 145 billion which is basically accounting for more than 10% of the GDP. This would also provide further employment to over 25 million people by 2016 making the automobile sector the sunrise sector of the economy.
According to the Confederation of Indian Industry, the automobile sector currently employs over 80 lakh people. An extension in production in the automobile industry is forecasted, it is likely to rise to Rs. 600000 crores by 2016.
