The tasks a Bidi Maker is expected to perform include:

Making bidies by hand by rolling shredded tobacco in bidi leaves

Collecting required quantity of shredded tobacco and bidi leaves

Soaking bidi leaves in water to moisten to make them pliable

Cutting leaves into pieces according to size of bidi to be made using tin stencil or plate and hand scissors

Putting measured quantity of tobacco filling on cut leaf and rolling it with fingers to make bidi of desired size and shape (conical) closing broader open end and pressing conical end flat

Tying piece of thread round rolled bidi to hold tight leaf and tobacco filling

Knowledge of checking visually whether bidies are of uniform size

Adept with tying finished bidies into bundles of twenty-five, fifty, etc. as required

Well-versed with placing bidi bundles in trays or baskets and delivering finished bidies to Bidi Checker

Working hours
Tobacco factories usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours every day. This may vary from one factory to factory

For freshers - INR 5,000 to INR 6,000 per month

For candidates with 2-4 years of experience or more - INR 6,000 to INR 7,000 per month

Growth Estimates and Latest Trends of Tobacco Industry in India

Exports of Indian tobacco and tobacco products have witnessed a rising trend and growth in the past few years. As of December 2014, the exports showed that India has so far exported 18,003 tonnes of tobacco in the period of 2014-15.

Currently, India is the second-largest exporter of FCV tobacco in the world and Indian tobacco is exported to around 100 countries. India exports unmanufactured tobacco primarily to Western Europe, South & South-east Asia, East Europe and Africa. All these factors put together is only going to increase the job opportunities in the Tobacco Industry across towns and cities in India.
