Tobacco is among the most important commercial crops in the country, making India the second largest producer globally. Tobacco was brought to India by the Portuguese in the 17th century and is now a much preferred variety in the world.
The Indian tobacco industry provides employment to millions of people directly involved in the production of the crop as well as the manufacture of tobacco products. Apart from this, it is a source of livelihood to a wide number of people involved indirectly in the packaging, transporting, warehousing etc of the products.
India is also a major exporter of tobacco and tobacco products, exporting to about 100 countries worldwide.
