Cheroot Maker

The tasks a Cigar or Cheroot Roller is expected to perform include:

Making cigars and cheroots from tobacco leaves by hand

Drying the tobacco leaves soaked in jiggery solution under the sun

Removing the rib and stalk from dried tobacco leaves

Sorting out suitable leaves for binding

Cutting filler tobacco leaves according to size and shape of cigar or cheroot to be made

Binding by hand filler leaves with binding leaf giving required shape to cigar or cheroot and pasting end of binding leaf

Rolling cigar or cheroot on slab or stone or hand surface giving necessary pressure with hands to obtain smooth roundness

Knowledge of cigar or cheroot making process

Well-versed with selecting suitable tobacco leaf for wrapping (superior quality imported thin tobacco leaf)

Adept with cutting wrapping leaf according to size and shape of cigar or cheroot by scissors and wrapping it on cigar or cheroot giving it final shape and smooth finish

Knowledge of cutting cigar or cheroot ends to obtain uniformity in size, using scissors or knife

Working hours
Tobacco factories usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours every day. This may vary from one factory to factory

For freshers - INR 600 to INR 900 per month

For candidates with 2-4 years of experience or more - INR 900 to INR 1,100 per month

Growth Estimates and Latest Trends of Tobacco Industry in India

Exports of Indian tobacco and tobacco products have witnessed a rising trend and growth in the past few years. As of December 2014, the exports showed that India has so far exported 18,003 tonnes of tobacco in the period of 2014-15.

Currently, India is the second-largest exporter of FCV tobacco in the world and Indian tobacco is exported to around 100 countries. India exports unmanufactured tobacco primarily to Western Europe, South & South-east Asia, East Europe and Africa. All these factors put together is only going to increase the job opportunities in the Tobacco Industry across towns and cities in India.
