The tasks a Conditioner, Tobacco is expected to perform include:

Treating the tobacco leaves by moistening them with water or steam to make them pliable for further processing

Moistening the leaves by dipping them in or spraying them with water, stacking leaves on drain board

Covering the leaves with hessian or other cloth and allowing them to absorb moisture for a specified time

Feeding the leaves into steam heated conditioning machine, observing gauzes, maintaining appropriate steam pressure and allowing leaves to absorb steam for a specified time

Knowledge of different grades and types of tobacco leaves

Well-versed with covering leaves with hessian cloth so that they can absorb moisture for a specified time

Knowledge of putting the leaves into steam heated conditioning machine

Proficient in operating the conditioning machine

Knowledge of the mechanism of regulating gauzes of steam pressure and letting leaves absorb steam for a specified time

Knowledge of mixing or blending several grades and types of tobacco and conditioning it for processing

Knowledge of conditioning a particular kind of tobacco leaf and be designated accordingly

Eye for detail

Good hand eye co-ordination

Diligent and hard working

Good observation skills

Ability to follow instructions

It is not a desk job

Need not handle a team

Local travelling maybe a part of this job

Part-time work and contractual jobs maybe available in some cities

Working hours
Tobacco factories usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours every day. This may vary from one factory to factory

For freshers - INR 3,000 to INR 5,000 per month

For candidates with 2-4 years of experience or more - INR 5,000 to INR 7,000 per month

Growth Estimates and Latest Trends of Tobacco Industry in India

Exports of Indian tobacco and tobacco products have witnessed a rising trend and growth in the past few years. As of December 2014, the exports showed that India has so far exported 18,003 tonnes of tobacco in the period of 2014-15.

Currently, India is the second-largest exporter of FCV tobacco in the world and Indian tobacco is exported to around 100 countries. India exports unmanufactured tobacco primarily to Western Europe, South & South-east Asia, East Europe and Africa. All these factors put together is only going to increase the job opportunities in the Tobacco Industry across towns and cities in India.
