The tasks a Reed Fitter (Harmonium) is expected to perform include:
Making wooden reed boards according to a sample or specification and fitting the metal reeds and strings onboard with screws
Selecting the wooden board
Marking and chiselling out grooves or slots to fit the reeds according to the sample or specifications
Fitting and screwing the reeds in the slots on the board and fixing the assembled reed frame to the cabinet
Operating the harmonium to check the reeds to give out the correct tune when the concerned key is depressed
Ability to work with a variety of materials including wood, metal, plastic and fibreglass, depending on the instrument
Well-versed in using traditional hand tools for working with wood or metal
Competent in tuning instruments to make sure they produce high-quality sound
Good hand-eye co-ordination
Dexterity of hands
Ability to tune harmoniums
Knowledge of making wooden cabinets and fitting the keyboard to the box
Ability to repair the used harmonium and replace old reeds
Attention to detail

Working hours
Musical instrument crafters usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit
