Woodworking Operator

The tasks a Mortiser Operator is expected to perform include:

Setting and operating mortising machine for cutting slots of prescribed dimension in wooden frames for making joints

Selecting and fitting appropriate cutting tools to machine spindle

Setting machine table and guides setters to hold stock in position

Collecting wood stock and checking marking for dimension of slot to be cut on it

Placing wood stock below cutting tool on machine table

Lowering cutting tool over marked area on wooden stock and setting its position for slotting

Ability to start machine and press down tool to cut slots of required dimensions

Proficient in checking dimensions and removing processed wood on completion

Knowledge of fitting appropriate cutting tools to machine spindle

Well-versed in placing wood stock below cutting tool

Knowledge of different types of wood such as Teak, Sheesham, Mango, Rosewood, Plywood and Particular Wood

Knowledge of cleaning and oiling machine

Knowledge of grinding and sharpening cutting tools

Ability to operate other wood cutting machines

Ability to focus for long hours

Dexterity of hands

Hand-eye coordination

Eye for detail

It needs one to be on their toes

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is not a part of this job role

Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

Work from home option is not available

Working hours
Wood & carpentry units usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours every day. This may vary from unit to unit

Occupational hazards may include lung diseases, breathing problems, asthma, musculoskeletal problems and overexertion injuries, respiratory disorders, injuries, eyesight problems, skin problems, backache, etc.

Health risks include exposure to small wooden chips, wooden dust, working with sharp objects, forceful use of wrist and finger flexors, etc.

For freshers - INR 5,000 to INR 6,500 per month

For candidates with 2-4 years of experience or more - INR 8,000 to INR 10,500 per month
