The tasks a Stone Carver is expected to perform include:

Carving out figures, letters and artistic designs on stone blocks, slabs or pillars using hand tools

Studying drawings, designs, models, nature of carving and artistic features

Selecting appropriate stone such as granite, green stone, soap stone, marble, etc.

Placing stone in working position

Laying out figures, designs, on surface of stone with chalk, pencil or ochre solution

Freehand sketching with drawing instruments, tracingpapers or by taking measurements from model

Applying thin layer of oil, if using granite stone

Carving out roughly along outline using hand hammer

Chiselling different shapes and sizes

Filing rough surfaces and brushing off dust

Sprinkling water on rough carving

Drilling holes with hand drill, as designed, using water as lubricant

Smoothening object to desired finish by rubbing with stones

Checking work frequently against sketch or model while carving to ensure accuracy

Competent in drilling holes and grooves in stone, according to diagrams and patterns

Knowledge of selecting chisels, pneumatic or surfacing tools and determining sequence of use

Competent in copying drawings on rough stone

Knowledge of using scribes or chalk and measuring instruments

Equipped to use hammers, chisels and power tools

Proficient in cutting deep slits using saw blades

Proficient in cuttingdecorative designs on stone surfaces

Equipped to inlay with lead or stone of different colours

Competent in carving out letters and figures

Competent in making clay model of carving to be done

Working hours

Companies usually work for 5/6 days a week and 8/9 hours everyday. This may vary from company to company Shift system maybe available

For candidates with upto 2 years experience INR 12,000 to INR 16,500 per month

For candidates with 2 to 5 years experience INR 16,500 to INR 20,500 per month

For candidates with over 5 years experience INR 20,500 to INR 23,000 per month
