The tasks a Test Engineer is expected to perform include:
Developing and coordinating scheduled and unscheduled test plans
Conducting software compatibility tests with programs, hardware, operating systems, or network environments
Documenting, reporting and tracking software defects using manual testing software
Well-versed with different sources of information available for designing tests and how to access them
Knowledge of different issues that may occur with the testing requirements and how to address them
Proficient with the principles of designing tests
Adept with the concepts of code coverage
Well-versed in creating suitable tests for particular applications
Proficient in determining whether the test cases are suitable to be automated or not
Adept in accessing, creating and modifying different types of high level scenarios, test cases , automatic scripts, test data and test plans
Knowledge of different test methodologies and procedures used to check the working and suitability of tests to the given purpose
Well-versed with the importance of collating feedback on work done
Adept in analysing and using feedback to improve tests
Proficient in scripting / programming of languages to understand test cases
Knowledge of current practice in the design of tests for software products/applications/modules
Well-versed with organisational policies, procedures and priorities for designing tests for software products/applications/modules
Certifications in TQM, ISO etc. quality process, software testing techniques, test writing plans
Ability to work independently

Future Trends for IT-ITES Sector in India
The IT-ITeS industry has been fuelling India?s growth story. In addition to contributing to the country?s Gross domestic Product (GDP) and exports, the industry has played a big role in influencing the socio-economic parameters across the country. The industry has helped provide employment and a good standard of living to millions. The IT-ITeS industry has almost doubled in terms of revenue and contribution to India?s GDP over the last six years (2008-2013). Export account for over 70% and domestic market account for 21% of the Industry revenue.
India?s acceptance as a preferred offshoring destination in the world is one of the main reason for the growth of export in Indian IT and ITES Industry. Again with the increased spending by Indian companies on IT and ITES services, the domestic market will be a major area of growth in the future and it is expected to grow at 8% in the near term.
The major segments of the Industry are IT Services, BPO, and Engineering Services, R&D, and Products. IT Services segment is the largest contributor accounting for about 60% of industry revenues. Business Processes Outsourcing has become the second largest and also one of the fastest growing segments in Indian IT- ITeS industry.
India is one of the fastest-growing IT services markets in the world. It is also the world's largest sourcing destination,accounting for approximately 52 per cent of the US$ 124-130 billion market. The country's cost competitiveness in providing IT services continues to be its USP in the global sourcing market.The major segments of the IT service sector are IT Consulting, Application Management, IS Outsourcing, Software development and support. The BFSI, telecom, retail, and manufacturing sectors account for major portion of the IT Services revenues.
Based on the trends witnessed in productivity and the likely growth potential of the IT and ITES industry, it is expected that the industry would result in an incremental employment of about 7.5 million persons directly by 2022. Out of which 3.6 million job opportunities will be in IT service sector. In the IT Exports segment, a large portion of the workforce is currently engineers and MCAs ?over 80%. The proportion of graduates of science and other streams engaged in software development is expected to show significant increase from about 5% to 10% currently to about 15% to 20%
