Supervisors of Protective Service Workers
The Supervisors of Protective Services Workers are the first line supervisors of correctional officers, police and detectives, firefighting and prevention workers, protective service workers, and security workers. They directly supervise and co-ordinate the activities of the various law enforcement, firefighting and protective services workers to ensure adherence to safety, departmental, legal and environmental norms and policies.
Firefighting and Prevention Workers
The Firefighting and Prevention Workers pathway includes firefighters, fire inspectors, investigators, and forest fire inspectors and prevention specialists. Typically, these professionals work to control and extinguish fires, inspect forest for fire hazards, inspect buildings to detect fire hazards and adherence to fire codes, check and recommend fire prevention and control measures, and provide disaster assistance. Additionally, they investigate causes of fires and explosions.
Law Enforcement Workers
Law enforcement workers are public sector employees whose duties involve primarily the enforcement of law. Law enforcement workers include jailors, correctional officers and bailiffs, criminal investigators and detectives, police officers and sheriffs, fish and game wardens, and parking enforcement officers. Typically, they are charged with maintaining law and order of an assigned area, prevent crimes and protect life and property, investigate suspected violations and conduct investigations, apprehend and arrest suspected criminals, guard prisoners etc. Most of the occupations in this pathway require carrying weapons.
Other Protective Service Workers
Other Protective Service Workers include professionals who provide protective services other than those listed in the Law Enforcement and Firefighting and Prevention pathways. These include animal control workers, transportation security screeners, private detectives and investigators, security guards, gambling investigators and surveillance officers, and life guards and ski patrol etc, among others. Most of them are employed by security and investigation service companies, retail establishments, hotels and recreational establishments, businesses etc. Responsibilities include gathering, compiling and reporting information to clients, guarding and monitoring premises to prevent theft and violence, monitoring recreational areas to maintain order and provide assistance etc.
