The tasks of a Lascar is expected to perform include:

Cleaning decks and deck equipment by washing decks, chipping points, painting wood, etc.

Breaking out rigs, overhauls lifeboats, cargo-handling and life-saving gears lowers and raises lifeboat

Taking depth sounding in unfamiliar or shallow waters and shouting information to bridge

Making ready derricks and winches for operation

Ability to load ships, store cargo, handle gear, stationary rigging, and running gear

Knowledge of ship stability, ship manoeuvring and ship management

Knowledge of maintaining tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship

Ability to maintain line and ship equipment

Knowledge of maintaining navigational and maintaining duties

Knowledge of using satellite and other electronic devices

Familiar with safety devices like life boats and other life-saving gears

Knowledge of stowing and removing cargo from hold

Ability to focus for long hours

Diligent and hardworking

Ability to follow instructions

Good communication skills

Physically fit

Mechanical ability

Ship usually sails for 5/6 days a week and works for 14/15 hours every day. This may vary from ship to ship
