The tasks a Band Builder, Tyre Building is expected to perform include:

Operating machine to glue together bands of ply stock for use in manufacture of rubber tyres

Positioning ply stock on drum and aligning with sides of drum

Depressing pedal to rotate drum while guiding ply on drum to form band

Proficiency in in swabbing wrinkles with benzol and smoothing by hand

Adept with splicing ends of ply by pressing with fingers

Well-versed with repeating operation, reversing angle of splice until specified number of plies are formed into band

Knowledge of depressing pedal or pulling lever to move rollers against band and rotating drum to band plies

Proficient in pushing pedal to collapse drum and pulling band from drum

Knowledge of rolling gum stock between plies and cutting with shears

Knowledge of wrapping canvas liners around bands to present adhering during storage

Knowledge of measuring ply stock with table marker and tearing stock on bias to specified length to form banding strips

Working hours are 10/12 hours everyday for 5/6 days a week. This may vary from factory to factory

Overview of Rubber Sector in India

There are about 6,000 units comprising 30 large scale, 300 medium scale and around 5,600 small scale and tiny sector units in the Rubber sector in India. Such units are manufacturing more than 35,000 rubber products, employing 4,00,000 people, which involves 22,000 technically qualified support personnel, contributing 40 billion to the National Exchequer through taxes, duties and other levies. The Indian Rubber Industry plays a vital role in the Indian national economy as the rubber plantation sector in India produces over 6,30,000 tonnes of natural rubber and there is a projected production of more than one million tonnes in near future.

The Indian rubber Industry comprises about 500 large and medium scale units and nearly 5,500 small and tiny units and is highly labour-intensive with 5,00,000 people directly employed in the industry. The Indian rubber industry consists of around 5,500 units and is dotted with the presence of several small and tiny units. Tyre industry constitutes around 60% of Indian rubber industry turnover.

With an estimated production of 125 million tyres during FY2013, the size of the Indian tyre industry is estimated at 285-290 billion. The auto industry consists of around 39 companies, spread throughout the country, with many being rather small. Tyre companies directly employ over 0.13 million persons of varying skill levels. Tyre industry consumes around 63% of the total Natural Rubber (NR) produced in the country. Since production of NR involves over 1 million growers (farmers), tyre industry provides gainful employment to nearly 0.5 million growers of NR, a majority of them in the small grower category.
