Pot Ceramic Work Maker

The tasks a Potter(Pottery and Porcelain) is expected to perform include:

Moulding clay with hands as it revolves on the potter?s wheel

Placing lump or soft pliable clay in the centre of a flat wheel

Rotating wheel by foot or machine, or by giving few quick turns using stick

Positioning clay on the centre of the wheel by pressure of hands, and making ware of desired shape and size by softening clay with water and manipulating with hands

Cutting ware from base with wet thread and removing it for drying

Knowledge of using different types of clay such as earthenware, stone ware and porcelain

Proficient in using various tools, pottery wheel, moulds, carving tools

Well-versed in using specialised oven for baking clay called kiln

Ability to shape and create new drawing for pots 

Ability to knead, work and prepare clay and bake wares in kiln

Skilled to trim dried articles to desired shape by turning it using cutting tools

Creative

Eye for detail

Artistic 

Requires one to be on their feet

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is not a part of this job

Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

Working hours
Factories usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from factory to factory

Shift system maybe available

Being self-employed is an option. In this case working hours and days are flexible

Occupational hazards may include breathing problem, ingestion etc.

Health risks include exposure to  metals (such as lead), fibro genic dusts (such as silica), heat, repetitive motion, radiation, and toxic emissions from kilns  etc.

For freshers - INR 8,000 to INR 9,000 per month

For candidates with 2-4 years of experience or more - INR 10,000 to INR 12,500 per month

Ceramic Industry

The ceramic industry in India came into existence about a century ago and has matured over time to form an industrial base. From traditional pottery making, the industry has evolved to find its place in the market for sophisticated insulators, electronic and electrical items. Over the years, the industry has been modernising through new innovations in product profile, quality and design to emerge as a modern, world-class industry, ready to take on global competition.

The Indian Ceramic Industry ranks at 8th position in the world and produces around 2.5% of global output. The industry provides employment to 550,000 people, of whom 50,000 are directly employed. Gujarat accounts for around 70 % of total ceramic production.

Glass Industry

Fuelled by growth in sectors like real estate, infrastructure, retail, automotive and food & beverages, the country's glass industry will acquire a market size worth 340 billion by 2015 from 225 billion at present. The organised glass industry as in 2013, employs 30 lakh people directly and provides indirect employment to 5 lakh people whereas the unorganised sector employs around 5-6 lakh people. About 75 per cent of the total glass industry is concentrated in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The highest employment in the glass industry is in Gujarat followed by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
