The tasks a Clay Toy Maker is expected to perform include:

Making toys from clay

Mixing mud or a special type of clay with water to make wet or plastic clay of the desired consistency

Selecting the appropriate wooden mould (in 2 pieces) to make the desired type of toys, figures, etc.

Pressing the wet mud or plastic clay or pouring the semi-liquid clay into the mould and allowing it to dry

Dismantling the mould blocks carefully and removing the moulded figure or toy

Fixing the required attachments to the toys to make a complete unit

Giving the finishing touches to the pieces with a blade and wet cloth to give the desired and distinct features and smoothness

Allowing the pieces to dry in the open sun or under the shade

Painting the clay form with a hand brush and the desired colours to give it the final touch

Ability to create and produce hand-made objects with clay

Knowledge of a variety of techniques, such as welding, weaving, pottery, and needlecraft

Well versed with creating the prototypes or models of objects to be crafted

Proficient in cutting, shaping, fitting, joining, moulding and other processes

Good sense of colours

Dexterity of hands

Good hand eye co-ordination

Knowledge to dress toys or dolls with the appropriate dress and other accessories such as hair and ornaments

Ability to make simple toys by hand moulding by building the form and features by deft use of fingers

Good aesthetic sense

Attention to detail

It requires one to be on their feet

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is not a part of this job

Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

Work from home option is not available

Working hours
Factories usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours every day. This may vary from factory to factory

Shift system maybe available

Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, working hours and days are flexible

Based on historical trends, the handicrafts sector is expected to grow by 16 per cent from 2013?17 and by another 16 per cent from 2017?22.
