The tasks of a Chief Engineer, Ship is expected to perform include:
Ensuring safe and economic running of all the engines, boilers, electrical, refrigerating and sanitary equipment, deck machinery and steam connections abroad ship
Directing and controlling work and conduct of engine room crew of vessel
Keeping a log of performance of engines and equipment on voyage
Supervising repairs and overhauling of the engines and accessories
Looking after fuelling of ship
Looking to proper storage and maintenance of all the engine room stores
Undertaking repair work in case of breakdown
Familiar with implementation of company safety and environment protection policy
Ability to hold safety meetings, emergency drills and training on board
Familiar with implementation of various safety checklists, plans, procedures related to safety of ship and pollution prevention
Ability to conduct various contingency drills
Knowledge of maintenance of ships and its machinery in accordance with procedures established by company
Ability to make sure that inspections are held at appropriate intervals and same are documented
Ability to maintain records of inspections, maintenance on board
Knowledge to raise and report any defect detected, analysis of such defects and take corrective actions
Well-versed in controlling and monitoring of spares and stores
Knowledge of testing and maintenance of standby and critical, system and equipments that are not in continuous use
Ability to successfully carry out internal and external audit
Ability to discuss results of audit within his department
Knowledge of attending repair work in case of breakdown
