The tasks a Roller Coverer is expected to perform include:

Operating and resurfacing metal drawing rolls of various spinning, combing and lapping machines with new rubber or leather covers

Cutting defective cover from drawing roll and using it as pattern for cutting new one from rubber or leather

Washing roller with steam or caustic soda solution

Inserting cover and metal roller into roller cover machine which automatically mounts cover on roller

Transferring roller to buffing machine and buffing cover to smooth surface and uniform thickness

Varnishing cleaned roller and wrapping with flannel replacing leather cover

Forming leather sleeve by gluing together sides of previously cut leather cover

Pulling sleeve by gluing together sides of previously cut leather cover

Pulling sleeve

over roller with aid of hand operated device and sealing ends of leather cover by painting with chemical solution

Ability to detect defects in rollers and patching them with leather or rubber

Skilled in operating metal drawing rolls and other related machines

Ability to wash roller from time to time

Skilled in cutting leather to even out the product

Knowledge of polishing and varnishing techniques for roller

Skilled in making sleeve and using chemicals to paint the leather
