Overview of the Postal Services Industry
The Indian Post Office Act, 1898, governs the postal services provided by the Department of Posts. In the present scenario, the Indian Postal Service under the Department of Posts is the world?s biggest post office system with more than 1,55,333 post offices that employ more than 5,20,000 people. The Department of Posts is part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of the Government of India and is commonly known as ?India Post?. Most of these postal services are provided at manually-operated counters; however, counter operations are now being progressively computerized to provide a greater range of services to customers from a single window, leading to services that are more responsive and error-free.
Growth Estimates and Latest Trends of the Postal Services Sector in India
The Department of Posts has a network of approximately 1.55 lakh post offices, of which 1.3 lakh are rural post offices. The IT modernization project will rebuild the rural postal infrastructure to create institutional last mile connectivity for the service delivery of post and IT based services including banking & insurance and govt. schemes like MGNREGS, Social Security etc. This infrastructure will form the platform for the electronic delivery of postal, financial, insurance and government services to the 80 crore plus rural population through post offices.
The project will also unlock revenue streams previously stymied due to lack of automation and will radically improve the delivery of mail to urban customers. This will help increase revenues in the banking and mail businesses, thereby leading to the economic sustainability of the Department of Posts. All these factors put together is only going to increase job opportunities in the postal services industry across towns and cities in India.
