An Overview of the Indian Oil & Petroleum Industry

India was the fourth largest consumer of crude oil and petroleum products in the world in 2013, after the United States, China and Japan. The petroleum industry (including oil and gas, and petrochemicals) encompasses and involves several processes globally including exploration, extraction, refining, transportation and marketing the petroleum products. Petroleum and hence petroleum products (fuel oil and gas, petrol and petrochemicals) are vital not just as directly consumable products, but also as raw materials for several other crucial industries, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides and plastics.

India projects an increase of the country?s refining capacity to 307.366 MMTPA by 2017 based on its current Five Year Plan (2012-17) to meet rising domestic demands and export markets.

In recent years, major discoveries in the Barmer basin in Rajasthan and the offshore Krishna-Godavari basin by smaller companies such as the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation and Andhra Pradesh Gas Infrastructure Corporation hold some potential to diversify the country?s production.

Employment Opportunities in Indian Oil & Petroleum Industry

By 2015-16, India?s demand for gas is set to touch 124 MTPA against a domestic supply of 33 MTPA and higher imports of 47.2 MTPA, leaving a shortage of 44 MTPA, as per projections by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry of India. Moreover, Business Monitor International (BMI) predicts that India will account for 12.4 per cent of Asia-Pacific regional oil demand by 2015.

The industry employs approximately 3.5 million as skilled and semi-skilled labour. With the projected increase, this figure is expected to increase to 3.8 million in the 2012-2017 plan.
