The tasks a Counsellor, Marriage and Family is expected to perform include:

Providing individual, marital and family counselling services to adults and children

Assisting clients to identify personal and interactive problems

Achieving effective personal, marital and family development and adjustment

Collecting information about clients (individuals, married couples or families), using interview, case history and observation techniques, appraisal and assessment methods

Analysing information collected to determine advisability of counselling or referral to other specialists or institutions

Reviewing notes and information collected to identify problems and concerns

Consulting reference material, such as textbooks, manuals and journals, to identify symptoms, make diagnoses and develop treatment plan

Counselling clients, using counselling methods and procedures, such as psychotherapy and hypnosis, to assist clients in gaining insight into personal and interactive problems

Evaluating results of counselling methods to determine reliability and validity of treatment used

Skilled in understanding the problems of couples

Skilled in interviewing and methods

Ability to provide an opportunity to reflect the relationship?s difficulties

Skilled in providing a direction to the client

Knowledge of the appropriate treatment that needs to be suggested to the client

Skilled in psychotherapy and hypnosis techniques in order to counsel the client better
