The tasks a Metrologist is expected to perform include:
Developing and evaluating different calibration systems
Measuring characteristics of objects, substances or phenomena such as length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, luminous intensity and derived units of physical or chemical measure
Identifying magnitude of error sources contributing to uncertainty of results, to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative terms
Redesigning or adjusting measurement capability to minimize errors
Developing calibration methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science
Understanding the technical analysis of measurement problems, and accuracy and precision requirements
Directing engineering, quality and laboratory personnel in design
Taking care of the manufacture, evaluation and calibration of both measurement standards and instruments
Testing systems to ensure selection of approved instrumentation
Advising others on methods of resolving measurement problems
Exchanging information with other metrology personnel through participation in government and industrial standardization committees and professional societies
In-depth knowledge of calibration systems
Skilled in measuring characteristics of objects
In-depth knowledge of length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, luminous intensity, etc.
Knowledge of derived units of physical or chemical measure
Ability to minimize errors
Skilled in developing calibration methods and techniques
Skilled in testing systems to ensure selection of approved instrumentation
