Overview of Electronics Sector in India

The electronic industry in India has grown from the production of 328 billion to 947 billion in the year 2009 at a CAGR of 16.4%. The high growth rate has been supported by healthy Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows. FDI in Electrical Equipments (which includes Electronics) has varied from 17% to 22% of total inflows. Industrial electronics is the second major export segment after electronic components with a significant share of 25% in total Electronic Hardware exports. According to the NSDC report, it is estimated that the demand for electronics (consumption) in India will be US $ 363 billion in 2015.

The Electronics and IT Hardware industry has the potential to grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of about 17% till 2022 and even thereafter considering the fact that the GDP is expected to grow at a rate of 7.5% to 8% over this period. Therefore, it is expected that the production of Electronics and IT Hardware will increase from 844 billion in 2008 to 7,520 billion by 2022. It is also expected that the Indian Electronics and IT Hardware manufacturing industry can target upto US $ 155 billion in revenues in the next 8 to 10 years. A growth rate of about 20% would be possible subject to sustained action by stakeholders for the development of this sector.

Among several challenges, shortage of skilled manpower has been identified as one of the most critical constraints that the sector is confronting. All these factors mean that there will be an increase in the employment opportunities of Pick and Place Assembly Operator in towns and cities across India.
