Future Trends for Consumer Electronics in India

The consumption of electronics in India is expected to reach $400 billion by 2020. The steady increase in the Private Final Consumption Expenditure (PFCE) on Home Appliances will drive the consumption and production of Electronics and IT Hardware in India, with major contributors being Computers, Consumer Electronics, and Telecom. It is expected that Indian Electronics and IT hardware sector will grow at a CAGR of about 17% till 2022.

Consumer electronics is the largest segment in Indian electronic industry and it accounts from 28% of the total electronic hardware production. The market of consumer electronics is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10 to 12 percent in future. Consumer electronic comprises of products like television, audio and video system, set top boxes, washing machines, air conditioners, etc.

The air conditioner (AC) market has seen a steady growth with a strong preference for split AC units over window AC units. Split ACs account for about 64% of sales of ACs (in value terms). Similarly the refrigerator market in India is expected to grow; with nearly half the households in villages had a television, but only less than 10 per cent owned a refrigerator in 2011-12, as per the latest government survey. In contrast, about 56 per cent families in cities didn't have refrigerators in 2011-12,

The washing machine market in India is estimated to be about 30% of the total home appliances market. Currently, the front loading washing machine category contributes 10% of the overall washing machine market in the country, which is very low compared to the developed countries. This category contributes about 70% in developed countries like US and Europe. Thus with the growing consumer electronic market in India, demand for Performance Tester for various electronic appliances will increase.

The human resource directly employed in the industry is estimated to increasing from the current level of 0.9 million to over 4 million by 2022. This would translate to an incremental human resource requirement of about 3 million to 3.2 million in the entire industry and about 0.6 to 0.7 million in servicing support role/Performance Tester- RACWO by 2022.
