The tasks an Acid Plant Operator is expected to perform include:

Maintaining and operating the acid plant for manufacturing specific acids by treating raw materials with acid or steam

Collecting the required amount of raw materials for preparation of desired acid

Setting up and checking equipment, valves, gauges and other instruments

Charging vessels with predetermined amount of chemicals

Regulating feed of materials into equipment

Controlling temperature in vessel by adjusting steam pressure

Checking progress of process by looking through peep holes

Observing temperature readings, pressure gauges and other instruments and making simple chemical tests

Regulating material feed and heating or cooling devices, as necessary

Removing acid when the process is completed

Knowledge of acids, chemical salts and their properties

Proficiency in making gadget readings and noting them

Well-versed with processing of raw materials like salts and acids, etc.

Competent in performing simple chemical tests

Knowledge of health hazards and safety guidelines

Chemical & petrochemical companies usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from company to company

Occupational hazards may include acid or steam injuries, infections, rashes or scalds, suffocation, breathing problems, eye or skin infections, etc.

Health risks include possible injuries due to exposure to steam, strong acids and chemical salts, chemical fumes and odours, etc.

For fresher - INR 280 to INR 380 per day

For candidates with 2-4 years of experience or more - INR 400 to INR 500 per day

Industry Outlook of Chemicals and Petrochemicals Sector

Indian chemical industry generates around 70,000 commercial goods ranging from plastic, toiletries and pesticides to beauty products. It is regarded as the oldest domestic sector in India and in terms of volume it gives a sense of pride to India by featuring as the 12th largest producers of chemicals. With an approximate cost of US$ 28 billion, it amounts to 12.5% of the entire industrial output of India and 16.2% of its entire exports. Under Chemical industries some of the other rapidly emerging sectors are petrochemical, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries.

Indian chemical industry comprises both small and large scale units, and presently, there are about 70,000 chemical manufacturing units located in the country. The industrys current turnover is about USD 30.8 billion which is 14 per cent of the total manufacturing output of the country.

Indian chemical industry is expected to register a growth of 8-9% in the next decade and is expected to double its share in global chemical industry to 5-6% by 2021.

Even though this industry is capital and technology intensive, the sector is a major avenue for large scale employment. The downstream plastic processing is the largest employer with over 3.53 million people deriving their livelihood from this sector.
