Cement Chemist

The tasks a Gauger (Cement) is expected to perform include:

Conducting simple tests of samples of cement in laboratory for physical properties at different stages of production

Collecting samples of material, weighing and mixing ingredients to prepare moulds for laboratory test

Setting apparatus and conducting routine tests to determine physical properties such as compression, tensile strength, setting time, etc.

Adding or eliminating ingredients as directed by chemist to remove defects and raise quality of product

Maintaining readings and observations for calculations and reference purposes

Cleaning and maintaining apparatus in good condition

Competent in conducting chemical tests for cement samples

Knowledge of physical and chemical properties of cement

Well-versed with preparing samples of material for testing

Well-versed with setting up apparatus for testing

Proficiency in maintaining readings and observations

Ability to do minor repairs to apparatus and equipment

Knowledge of undertaking tests independently

Ability to assist chemist to conduct research work

Knowledge of storing, maintaining account of instruments, equipment, apparatus, etc. if required

Diligent and hardworking

Good observation skills

Good mathematical skills

Good numerical and analytical skills

Ability to work independently or in teams

It requires one to be on their toes

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is not a part of this job role

Chemical & petrochemical companies usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from company to company

Indian chemical industry generates around 70,000 commercial goods ranging from plastic to toiletries and pesticides to beauty products. It is regarded as the oldest domestic sector in India and in terms of volume it gives a sense of pride to India by featuring as the 12th largest producers of chemicals. With an approximate cost of US$ 28 billion, it amounts to 12.5% of the entire industrial output of India and 16.2% of its entire exports. Indian chemical industry comprises both small and large-scale units, and presently, there are about 70,000 chemical manufacturing units located in the country. The industrys current turnover is about USD 30.8 billion which is 14 per cent of the total manufacturing output of the country.

Indian chemical industry is expected to register a growth of 8-9% in the next decade and is expected to double its share in global chemical industry to 5-6% by 2021.

Even though this industry is capital and technology intensive, the sector is a major avenue for large scale employment. The downstream plastic processing is the largest employer with over 3.53 million people deriving their livelihood from this sector.
