The tasks a Station Master, Railway is expected to perform include:

Coordinating work of all employees at railway station and supervising operation of all trains within his station limits

Notifying employees of changes in arrival and departure times of trains, boarding track numbers, and other changes affecting passengers for announcement over loud speakers and for posting on call board

Ascertaining that shift workers and trains crews report as scheduled, and obtaining replacements, if necessary

Supervising activities of passengers service personnel to ensure efficient and courteous service

Obtaining clearance of line from next or junction station

Authorizing departure of passenger trains after transfer of mail and baggage is completed, delaying its departure, if necessary

Authorizing repairs of station facilities or delegating their supervision

Investigating into causes of public complaints, minor accidents, etc. and takes remedial steps

Reporting major mistakes, accidents, etc. to higher authorities

Supervising performance of clerical and station staff, maintaining prescribed records, registers, account, stock position, etc.

Submitting reports and returns as scheduled

Proficient in coordinating work of all employees at railway station and supervising operation of all trains

Proficient in reporting major mistakes, accidents, etc. to higher authorities

Knowledge of all railway traffic and operative rules

Proficient in examining records and registers maintained

Knowledge of safety regulations to be followed

Proficient in resolving public complaints and investigating minor accidents, theft of goods, delays, etc.

Knowledge of performing clerical tasks, selling tickets, etc. in small stations
