The Food Industry in India

The Indian Brand Equity Foundation in their report on the Food Industry of India have referred to this industry as the highest profit incurring sector considering the scope it has to offer for value addition. In particular the food processing industry in India has been recognized as a high-priority area. This is because the food processing industry is one of the largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth.

India has been known as the original home of sugar and sugarcane. Indian mythology supports the above fact as it contains legends showing the origin of sugarcane. India is the second largest producer of sugarcane next to Brazil. Presently, about 4 million hectares of land is under sugarcane cultivation with an average yield of 70 tons per hectare. This industry involves a total capital investment of INR 1,250 crore and provides employment to 2.86 lakh workers. Between 2nd October and 20th October, the cane harvest in India has reportedly jumped 12% to 392.2 MT, according to the SGS survey conducted across the states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

With all these figures in consideration, it is safe to say that the demand for a Cannery Worker (Can & Preservations) will surely increase in the coming years.
