The tasks of a Fitter, Marine is expected to perform include:

Repairing, servicing and overhauling engines and accessories of ships, boats etc., under guidance of Marine Engineer

Examining drawings and other specification

Checking and measuring parts for flaws and other accuracy of fit using gauges, micrometres etc.

Removing defect by chipping, filing, scraping, grinding and does other supplementary tooling as necessary

Assembling engines and auxiliary machinery in position

Testing completed assembly and making necessary adjustments

Dismantling partly and complete machinery in ship

Removing and replacing worn and damaged parts

Reassembling parts as per drawings under guidance of Marine Engineer using hand and portable tools

Testing and inspecting installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials and removes defects

Ability to use tools like lathe, grinder, milling machine, drilling machine, power tools, etc.

Knowledge of doing welding and fitting jobs

Familiar with assembly of engineering components

Knowledge of mechanical assembly

Well-versed in operation of computerised production machines

Knowledge of welding of materials at various locations on the ship

Ability to allocate work, maintain discipline and ensure that tasks are properly completed by ratings

Proficient in maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of engine room

Knowledge of proper stowing of tools, maintenance and stowing of hydraulic tools, fitting and turning equipment?s

Ability to assist the deck crew with mooring and unmooring the vessel

Ability to attend to minor electrical defects

Knowledge of keeping watch on engine, boiler and other machinery and assisting in their operation

Ability to focus for long hours

Diligent and hardworking

Working hours

Shipyard usually sails for 5/6 days a week and works for 9/11 hours every day. This may vary from shipyard to shipyard
