The tasks a Broom Maker is expected to perform include:

Fastening materials such as palm leaves, coconut leaf ribs, brooms - grass or bamboo wickers together or to broom handles with rope or wire to form brooms

Selecting and sorting material according to the length and quality of the broom to be made

Examining and removing stems which are short, broken or do not otherwise meet standards

Arranging and fastening material together or around the end of the wooden handle by winding and stapling the wire, rope, leather or metal strips

Trimming the broom material to uniform length

Knowledge of determining utilization of equipment, like seeding, clipping, stapling plus winding machines, etc.

Ability to set up & adjust machine equipment

Well-versed with requesting for materials and supplies

Proficient in examining and removing stems that do not meet standards

Near vision

Manual dexterity

Will be updated

Attention to detail

Hand-eye coordination

Arm-hand steadiness

It requires one to be on their feet

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is not a part of this job

Working hours
Broom manufacturers usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit

According to provisional data, the exports of Indian handicrafts in the period of April?August 2014-15 has shown an increase of US$ 256.32 million, which is about 18.06 per cent over the same period in 2013-14.

Based on historical trends, the handicrafts sector is expected to grow by 16 per cent during 2013?17 and by another 16 per cent during 2017?22.
