The tasks a Furniture Maker, Cane is expected to perform include:

Making cane furniture by sizing and dressing the required cane pieces, bending them to shape by heating, and fastening parts together with cane strips and nailing them

Studying the pattern, size and design of furniture to be made

Selecting the cane rods, cutting them to the required length, and shaving the pieces to remove projections

Heating the frame pieces and other sticks with a blow torch, and bending them to the desired shape

Fastening the sticks together and weaving the wickers in, through and around the frame, cutting off and concealing or weaving together the loose ends to finish the edges

Winding the wickers around the joints to strengthen and conceal them

Proficiency in handling various instruments related to making cane furniture

Competent in identifying defects

Well-versed in the various processes of making furniture with cane

Knowledge of the various styles of cane furniture

Ability to polish or paint furniture

Knowledge of fitting cushions in chairs, sofa sets, etc.

Knowledge of undertaking the repair work of old furniture

Hand-eye co-ordination

Manual dexterity

Attention to detail

Good aesthetic sense

Precision skills

Diligent and hard-working

It requires on to be on their feet

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is not a part of this job

Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

Working hours
Handicraft and carpet units usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit

Shift system maybe available

Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible
