Cane Basket Maker

The tasks a Basket Maker is expected to perform include:

Making baskets of the specified size and shape by interlacing willow, rattan or other materials

Forming the bottom of the basket by interlacing strips of bamboo or similar material with a framework of bamboo ribs

Inserting ribs around the edge of the bottom and between the woven sections of the bottom to serve as a framework for the sides

Bending the ribs perpendicular to the bottom and securing them to hold them in position for the weaving of the sides and weaving strips through the ribs until the sides are completed

Tapering or pointing the ends of the protruding ribs and bending and inserting them into the spaces in the top edge of the woven sides

Knowledgeable about the features of cane

Proficient in making designs with cane

Competent in working with cane and weaving cane

Finger and thumb agility

Ability to make solid bottom boards, using band saws, drill presses, and carpenters' hand tools

Knowledge of interlacing reeds through stakes (rods), secured in screw blocks, to form parts of basket, such as the woven bottom

Ability to design baskets

Hard working

Detail oriented

Alert and attentive

Creativity in furniture designing

Local travelling is not a part of this job

Working hours
Handicrafts & Carpet units usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit

Shift system maybe available

Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible
