The tasks a Breakesman, Railway is expected to perform include:

Segregating inflammable materials and if experienced in passenger or goods train to receive and deliver parcels, luggage and goods

Receiving instruction from Guard, Passenger Train or Guard, Goods Train and checking train formation, couplings, lights and other safety devices

Receiving parcels, goods, luggage etc. from Parcel Clerks or Goods Clerk

Grouping items in car by station of discharge to facilitate quick unloading

Exchanging signals with Guards and Drivers while operating in ghat section trains

Maintaining record of items loaded and unloaded at each station

Informing Guard at rear of train when transfer of goods is completed

Assisting Guard, Passenger Train in his duties

Knowledge of different kinds of materials i.e. inflammable or flammable

Proficient in examining train formation, couplings, lights and other safety devices

Well-versed in maintaining record of items loaded and unloaded at each station

Proficient in grouping items in car by station of discharge to facilitate quick unloading

Knowledge of assisting sick, aged or lady passenger in entraining and detraining while on duty in mail, express or passenger train
