The tasks a Texturing Artist is expected to perform include:Visualizing possibilities for adding textures to models to create photo-realistic models/images Developing and adding textures to models in accordance with the design brief and concept art for different types of models

Adapting the textures to the final exhibition Managing the quality of textures during the animation process Maintaining uniformity and consistency in the final output

Knowledge of the principles of colour theory and ways in which it can be explored to meet the needs of the production

Well-versed with the lighting properties and concepts like three point lighting, Blinn, Lambert, transparency, self-illumination, glow, bump, etc.Proficient in applying colour effects such as colour tones, textures, etc.Adept at working on software such as Autodesk Maya, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Blender, Mud Box, Zbrush, Mari, etc.Knowledge of the fundamentals of drawing, painting and sculpting

Well-versed with the fundamentals of modelling, multi-pass rendering and lighting

Proficient in optimizing or enhancing textures as per the needs of production

Knowledge of techniques of texture mapping, projection and managing texture seams

Training in 3D software such as Maya, 3D Studio Max, etc.

Overview of Media & Entertainment Sector in India

The current employment across Media & Entertainment sector is estimated to be over 1 million persons (in terms of direct employment only). The Private Final Consumption Expenditure (PFCE) on Entertainment would grow at a CAGR of 13% to 14% between 2008 and 2022. The Media and Entertainment industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country. The animation segment in India is in its early growth stage and is poised for growth in the future.

The entertainment animation section contributes to around 70% to the total animation industry. TV animation, the largest user of animation in India, is considered to be the most basic form of animation from which most of the companies start and evolve to other forms like VFX and fully animated movies.

Animation is fairly recent concept in Indian cinema. Some of the Indian animated movie makers have collaborated with DreamWorks, Walt Disney, and Pixar Animation. Apart from pure 2D or 3D animated movies, application of animation in films is also increasing.

It is projected that the total employment in the Media and Entertainment industry would increase from about 1 to 1.1 million persons in 2008 to about 4 to 4.1 million persons in 2022, an incremental human resource requirement of about 3 million persons. This means that in the future, there is going to be a continuous and increasing demand for this job role. All these factors put together is only going to increase the job opportunities for a Texturing Artist across major towns and cities in India.
