Meat inspector

The tasks a Grader, Meat is expected to perform include:

Examining animal carcasses to determine grade in terms of sales value

Examining carcasses suspended from stationary hooks or hooks attached to overhead conveyor

Determining the grade of the meat based on age, sex, shape, thickness of meat, quantity and distribution of fat, colour, texture and marbling of lean meat

Attaching the grade identification tag to the carcass

Estimating weight of carcass or observing dial of automatic weighing scale to determine weight of carcass

Knowledge of different types of animal meats

Knowledge of the process of meat grading and the acceptable fat levels and standards of meat

Skilled in handling animal carcasses and evaluating meat

Knowledge of different parameters for grading meat like age, sex, shape, thickness of meat, quantity and distribution of fat, colour, texture and marbling of lean meat

Ability to inspect or test horticultural products or livestock to detect harmful diseases, chemical residues or infestations

Knowledge of the basic principles, concepts and methodologies of grading and certification work

Proficient in writing reports

Knowledge of occupational safety and health laws, food and safety laws

Knowledge of the official standards, regulations and rules relevant to meats

Food Industry in India

The Indian Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) in their report on the Food industry of India have referred this industry as the highest profit incurring sector considering the scope it has to offer for value addition. In particular the food processing industry getting in India has been recognized as a high-priority area. This is because the food processing industry is one of the largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth.

The meat production, which jibes well with dairying, is placed at No. 8 position in the world. India produces about 4.9 million tons of meat annually valued at US $ 4,600 million, and has grown at 5% during the last two decades. However, during the last five years, this segment has been growing very fast at the rate of 27% annually and has a good future given the present attention by the Government and private entrepreneur.

With all these figures in considerations it is safe to say that the demand for a Grader, Meat is there in the present and will surely increase in the coming years.
