The Automotive sector is vital for the economy as:

This sector is one of the largest markets in the world. More than 3.7 million automotive vehicles were produced in India in 2010 (an increase of 33.9%), making India the second fastest growing automobile market in the world (after China).

Chennai is home to around 35-40% of India's total automobile industry and for this reason it is known as the Detroit of Asia. It is on the way to becoming the world's largest Auto hub by 2016 with a capacity of over 3 million cars annually.

For the future, the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has the Automotive Mission Plan aims to accelerate and sustain growth in the sector over the period 2006 to 2016.

The projected growth of the automotive industry is positive, and this indicate better job opportunities for professionals such as Machine Tool Operators (P) and others.
